Happy New Year! There’s so much more to come in 2025. Between new characters, modes, engine rewrites, and stages, we’re expecting this year to be one of Sonic World’s best. Stick around to see.

We haven’t done this in a while!
While we have no content 100% ready to show yet from the scope expanding for V2.0, we thought we’d take time to check what everyone thinks of the current Sonic World experience and how to improve it.
Even if you haven’t touched World since 2017, please fill it out, so we can help make the game the best it can be.
Sonic World is a sandbox, heavily moddable game styled after Sonic Adventure and Sonic Heroes that initially released in 2014. This is an online version of Release 9, the 2018 version of the game. The goal of this is to polish it enough to put it into Sonic World DX, the definitive version of Sonic World that pushes Blitz3D to its limits!
Release 9’s base gameplay has been mostly unaltered. All focus has been to include online play. It includes the following features:
This is an open beta, many bugs are present! Keep this in mind as you play,
How to play:
After over 5 years of release, and after the 10th anniversary of the original Sonic World, the source code for Sonic World Release 9 is available and installation is documented!
Everything should be there to get the code up and running, except for the assets, which you should pull from an existing release 9 download.

After the drama with the original creator, developers started to spin off using the then-abandoned code, eventually becoming what Sonic World DX came today.
We hope making this open source that it may cause new developments with this, may it be additions to the game, fixes of long-running issues from the years old code, etc.
As Sonic World’s 10th anniversary approaches, team member has made a 2 hour documentary on the history of BlitzSonic up until Sonic World DX 1.2. A must-watch for anyone who played Sonic World or any 3D Sonic fangame between 2006-2015!
It contains comprehensive behind the scenes from every version of Sonic World and the most influential BlitzSonic fangames.
After a few months of silence, the next major version of Sonic World DX is here!

It also adds Chemical Plant, Rusty Ruin, Space Colony ARK and Sky Rail as new stages in the roster!

1.1.20 will be the next patch update.
We’ll be working towards adding compatibility for Legacy character mods and the animation system. this makes them way easier to port, only requiring minor text editing knowledge.
Shown with EnderPreston’s Steve mod for R9 and Chalpha Eve’s Kirby mod.

The model will still need minor changes to be compatible. Old movesets are NOT ported so most unique skill animations will have to be adjusted. Most mods using Sonic, and the President’s skillset will not be affected (Sonic would just need his throw animation deleted)
This does make porting Legacy mods much easier as you don’t need to worry about the added animations (victory, wait, mach, skydive, etc)
Want to know what mods this opens up opportunities for? Legacy mods can be found here: Link. Once 1.1.20 releases, we will supply a tutorial both on the Gamebanana and the supplied mod documentation. Our modding community means the World (ha) to us, so we hope this lets new fans and old replay older mods easier in this improved version of Sonic World.
